“God damn it…” Chloe sighed as she dropped the vibrator. It vibrated on the bed and rolled against her thigh.

The sex toy just wasn’t doing it for her. She had spent the last half an hour pleasuring herself and didn’t feel like she’d really got any closer to orgasm than when she started. She looked up at the ceiling in frustration.

It was Thursday. She still had another day or work. It felt like the week would never end. It had been a particularly dull one, the only blip breaking the monotony being an e-mail coming down from their new CEO, someone Chloe hadn’t met and hadn’t bothered to learn the name of, detailing new rules and regulations that they were all to follow. Paige had been right; they seemed like a real hard ass.

Chloe’s fingers drummed on the mattress. She reached down and turned the vibrator off, putting it on the bedside table and picked up her phone instead. Scrolling through her contacts until she found the name of her immediate supervisor, she tapped on the screen.

“Hey, sorry, I’m not going to be able to come in tomorrow.” Chloe paused. She typed several possible ailments and then deleted them again, “Women’s problems.”

Chloe’s supervisor was an older man who was very near retirement, she knew that he never asked any questions and became very quick to change the subject when “women’s problems” came up. Less than a minute later her phone buzzed, and she saw the old man wishing her well. She smiled. She didn’t often skip work, but she needed something that her vibrator couldn’t give her.

Chloe jumped out of bed and hurried into the bathroom to get ready. She wasn’t going to waste a day off by doing nothing, she was going to head straight to the club and find someone to keep her company. Chloe knew that if she asked Paige, she would immediately call out sick and join her, but that would’ve looked suspicious and, to be frank, Paige was acting a little too attached for Chloe’s liking. It always happened that way with her though, Paige needed a cooling off period after nights together to remember that they were just friends and nothing more. Chloe absolutely didn’t want to get attached to anyone.

After a shower, Chloe got dressed and headed out. It was somewhat of a risk, the club was frequented by her work colleagues after all, but if any of them saw her there the chances were they weren’t supposed to be out either.

Chloe put on her make-up and headed out, catching a cab to the club since she knew there was little chance she would be in a state to drive when she left. Once in the club she made a beeline for the bar. Since it wasn’t the weekend, and it was still early, it was quite a bit less crowded and even the music seemed more subdued. The club was unusual in that it stayed open during the day, turning into something more resembling a regular bar. A sort of club/bar hybrid. Chloe had barely started her drink when a guy started talking to her. She was more than OK with it, he was cute and a good conversationalist, but Chloe wasn’t ready to go all in within the first person she saw and after ten minutes she made excuses and went to the bathroom. When she came back out, it was to stand at a different part of the bar.

Chloe talked to another guy and a woman, neither of whom really blew her socks off, before she saw someone that made her heart skip a beat. Sitting alone at a nearby table, holding a drink and looking out on to the empty dancefloor was the very woman who had so shaken Chloe’s confidence the previous weekend.

There was an air of confidence coming from the stranger. She sat at the table as if daring people to come talk to her, that she already knew no one would touch her standards. She was beautiful, Chloe quickly looked away and then finished her drink for Dutch courage.

“Fuck it…” Chloe muttered to herself.

Halfway to the table, Chloe wondered if she wasn’t making a big mistake. She didn’t really understand where this hesitation was coming from, it wasn’t like she hadn’t had plenty of experience talking to people or flirting with attractive members of either gender. What was it about this woman that seemed so imposing?

“Here alone?” Chloe asked as she reached the table.

The woman turned her head slowly to look at Chloe. She seemed unsurprised that Chloe was there, as if it had been her plan all along and Chloe was walking into it like a fly wandering too close to a web. She was smiling, not widely, but politely. Chloe felt her stomach lurch and rather wished she had allowed her nerves to keep her on the other side of the room.

“I am.” The woman said. She nodded towards the chair opposite her.

Chloe sat down and placed the dregs of the beer she had been drinking on the table. She looked up and met the woman’s eyes, instantly she was taken back to the previous week again. She looked away quickly, trying to find something to take her attention.

“My name’s Chloe.” Chloe said as she sat back in her seat and tried to remain casual.

“Amanda.” The woman replied. She was leaning back with her legs crossed. Dangerously close to giving Chloe a view under her fairly long skirt.

“Do you come here often?” Chloe asked. She saw Amanda let out a little snort of laughter that she couldn’t hear due to the music. Not thumping like it did at night, but loud enough that you had to raise your voice slightly, especially when sitting near a speaker like they were, “I only ask because I think I saw you last week.”

“I do.” Amanda replied casually, “And you did.”

Chloe swallowed. Amanda was projecting a kind of confidence that it was difficult to match. It felt like she was giving off an aura that was just making Chloe want to shrink away; it wasn’t something she was at all used to. The woman was even more attractive up close than she had been from down the bar. Chloe was sure of one thing. She wasn’t going to be going home with anyone else.

“Don’t you have work?” Chloe asked. Desperately searching for a normal conversation topic.

“Don’t you?” Amanda replied.

“I’m playing hooky.” Chloe said with a playful smile.

“Naughty.” Amanda commented. She smiled as well; it was hard to say if she was actually interested or just humouring Chloe.

Chloe didn’t know what to say to that. Finding words was normally easy for her, faced with Amanda she felt like her tongue had been tied into a knot. She was normally very good about telling if someone was interested in her, Amanda seemed to be giving nothing away. For some reason that made Chloe more interested rather than less. Feeling more anxious than usual when having a basic conversation, Chloe needed to find a way to capture Amanda’s attention.

“Do you dance?” Chloe asked.

“Sometimes.” Amanda replied simply, “It depends on who’s asking me.”

“What if it’s, erm… me?” Chloe asked. She kicked herself for how she sounded. Where was that coolness that she kept? Instead, she sounded like a nervous teenager talking to a crush.

Amanda seemed to look around the room for a few seconds. Chloe wondered if she was seriously weighing up her options the same way Chloe did when deciding who to get with. Maybe she was just pretending to think through the offer when she really had no intention of dancing with her. Chloe waited. Amanda eventually looked back at her and smiled. With a small nod of her head, she gracefully stood up and held a hand out for Chloe as if they were at some posh party and not the cheapest club in town.

Chloe stood up and took Amanda’s hand, following her out on to the mostly empty dancefloor. They went to the middle before Amanda let Chloe go and started to dance in place. Chloe soon followed suit. She never normally felt self-conscious when she was dancing, she knew she wasn’t great at it but she also knew that her actual ability was besides the point. It was an excuse to be near the other person, sweating and touching, foreplay for what would come later.

This was different though. Chloe was almost entranced by the way Amanda moved. She danced as if all eyes should be on her and Chloe struggled to keep up. They didn’t speak much; it was all Chloe could do to stay on her feet even though Amanda seemed like she continue for hours and hours.

Chloe tried to get closer to her potential partner for the night. She stepped forwards and held out her arms to wrap around Amanda, but the taller woman backed away. She never stopped smiling though, she watched Chloe as if assessing her.

“Hard to get, eh?” Chloe muttered. The sound of the music making her words inaudible even to her own ears.

Throughout the repetitive songs which followed Chloe tried a few more times to progress things. She was an old hand at the process and knew how it should go, but Amanda kept deftly side-stepping any attempt to make the dancing more intimate than that between two friends.

“I need the bathroom.” Chloe called out as one song ended. It felt like they had been dancing for an hour, and she was drenched in sweat. Amanda nodded airily and continued to move in her own hypnotic way.

Chloe did need to use the toilet, but more than that she needed a break from the exercise. She was sweaty and as she pushed through the door into the toilets, she blew up and over her face, moving some of her hair away. She leaned on the sink and looked into the mirror. It looked like she had just run a marathon.

As Chloe looked at her reflection, she started to wonder why things were different. Normally she was the most confident woman in the world, sexually liberated and knowing exactly what she wanted. So why did she have butterflies in her tummy? Why did it feel like she couldn’t read Amanda in the way she so easily did for everyone else?

“Relax…” Chloe muttered as she turned on the faucet.

Chloe splashed some water on her face and then spent a few minutes hastily reapplying her make-up. When she walked back out into the club, she looked out over the dancefloor but couldn’t see Amanda. She frowned as she looked around. Through a small gap in the crowd, she saw the exit and just a glimpse of Amanda heading out. Chloe started pushing her way through to follow.

Stepping back out into the chill air, Chloe saw Amanda standing a few feet away. She was leaning back against the wall with her phone in her hand. Apparently, completely unbothered that she had been about to abandon Chloe. Sure, Chloe had done such a thing herself plenty of times, to people that bored her, but no one did it to her!

“Leaving already?” Chloe called out as she walked over.

Chloe expected Amanda to look a little sheepish or embarrassed over the fact that she had been caught walking out on her. Instead, Amanda looked up and seemed unconcerned. She tapped a few more times on her phone and put it back in her bag.

“Yeah, the music was boring me.” Amanda said.

“Oh? Not something I did then?” Chloe asked. She hated that she genuinely cared if it was her that had done something.

“Oh, no.” Amanda smiled and shook her head, “You’ve been fun.”

“Cool.” Chloe said. She leaned against the wall next to Amanda, unconsciously copying her pose. She decided it was time to be bold and at least pretend to have the confidence she didn’t feel, “So, are we going back to yours or mine?”

“Hmm?” Amanda frowned slightly.

“You know…” Chloe waved her hand in front of her as if it was obvious, “We had a drink, we talked, we danced, and now we… You know how this works.”

Chloe could tell Amanda knew exactly what she was getting at. She was feigning innocence, something that was getting quite tiring for Chloe. She wasn’t used to her conquests making her work so hard to get what she wanted.

“I think I’m going home.” Amanda said after a few seconds, “Alone.”

“A-Alone?” Chloe repeated as if the very concept was ridiculous.

“Yes.” Amanda said, “As in, by myself.”

“But I… But we…” Chloe frowned. This didn’t make any sense to her.

As Chloe struggled to work out why Amanda was bucking the formula, a car pulled up on the curb. Amanda checked her phone once more and then leaned down to give the driver a thumbs up.

“Goodbye, Chloe.” Amanda said.

Chloe remained rooted to the spot and stared in confusion as Amanda opened the door and stepped inside the car. The sound of the door closing seemed to snap Chloe out of her stunned thoughts. Before she knew what she was doing, she was leaning down and looking through the window of the car. Amanda seemed to be saying something to the driver.

“But we’re supposed to fuck!” Chloe called out, heedless of who could hear her.

Amanda looked at Chloe again. This time, for once, she had seemingly abandoned her placid smiles. She seemed genuinely quite shocked. Rolling her eyes she looked back at the driver and nodded her head. Chloe felt the car starting to move and as it pulled away from the pavement, she was left watching it go.

Chloe felt frustrated. She understood it was Amanda’s choice as much as hers what did or didn’t happen that night, but she would’ve been lying if she said she wasn’t feeling rather worked up and frustrated.

“Ey, baby, you can go home with me if you like!” The sound of an obviously drunk young man came from behind Chloe.

Chloe turned to see a group of three men, they were each snickering presumably having witnessed Chloe’s display. She pushed past them and headed towards the bus stop. With each step she got angrier. She felt like she had been led on. If Amanda had no interest in her then she should’ve said so rather than let things go on for as long as they did. Now she was doing one of her least favourite things, going home alone.
