“Are you sure you’ll be OK with him?” Davina asked anxiously.
“Mom, we’ll be fine.” Kate said firmly, “I’m never going to get my qualifications without more hands-on experience.”
“You could do that here…” Davina said.
“Unsupervised, mom. You and dad won’t be there when I’m working.” Kate said with a smile.
“But…” Davina started.
“Let them go.” William said from the armchair in the corner of the room as he lowered his newspaper, “They’ll be fine, love, you know that.”
Richy was stood in the hallway by the entrance to the living room. His hand was clutched in his sister’s, after she had just finished tying his shoelaces for him. He was dressed in an overly colourful shirt and shorts that bulged out thanks to the diaper underneath. The shirt didn’t quite go low enough to hide the waistband of his padding either.
“You’ve got my phone number if there’s a problem, yes?” Davina asked, “And you’ve packed extra diapers? His favourite pacifier is in the side pocket, oh, and be careful of the bigger kids who might bully him, and…”
“Mom.” Kate said firmly, “We’ll be fine.”
Richy saw his mom about to open her mouth to say something else. She seemed to think better of it and just nodded her head. Richy was led waddling to the door. He really wished he didn’t have to go outside, being in public in his current state was the worst.
“Have fun.” Davina said as the front door was opened.
Richy walked outside and blinked in the sunlight. He tried to avoid going outside at all costs, though what he could actually do to avoid it was limited. As a baby, he had little choice in where he went or when he did things. He looked over his shoulder fretfully at his mother. It had only been a fortnight since Kate first babysat him, but since acknowledging he had developed an attachment issue with his mom it somehow made being away from her even scarier.
“Goodbye!” Davina called out as she waved her hand in the air, “Take care!”
“See you later.” Kate replied.
Richy was led up the path, his hand in his sister’s, and he heard the front door close behind him. He almost automatically tried to hide behind Kate’s legs a little. That was until he nearly tripped them both up, at which point he walked next to her again.
“Mom can be such a worrywart.” Kate said with a little chuckle, “Honestly, if she doesn’t think you’re safe with me for a few hours, then how will she feel about me taking care of other Littles?”
Richy knew the question was hypothetical. At the very least, he wasn’t going to be expected to answer. It turned out that Kate, had found a passion for looking after Littles and now wanted to make it a career. Richy was horrified that his once fiercely anti-establishment sister was now going to be enforcing the awful status quo, the one that was keeping him down. It was even worse knowing that it was looking after him that had convinced her.
Kate’s new career path meant that, since first babysitting him two weeks ago, she’d become very active in taking care of him. Too active, in Richy’s opinion. She’d been trying out all the different parenting methods she had been learning about in her classes and, unfortunately for Richy, the latest one was that it was important for Littles to socialise.
“You’re going to have such a good time at the park!” Katie said excitedly, “You must be looking forward to it after being cooped up at home for so long. I keep telling mom and dad they need to take you out more, but you know… they aren’t as young as they used to be, and with work… Well, anyway, let’s look forward to the park, eh?”
The only thing Richy was looking forward to doing was getting back home again. He was dreading what was to come, having to be seen at the park was one of his worst nightmares. He waddled along next to Katie and looked around as if everything he was seeing was alien. It certainly felt like it all belonged to a different world, one that had left him behind.
“What are you most looking forward to playing on?” Katie asked.
Richy shrugged. His free hand patted his chest until he found his pacifier, it was an almost unconscious reaction to feeling worried that he pushed the latex bulb between his lips and sucked on it. When he saw someone walking the opposite direction on the other side of the street, he spat it out again. It was stupid, his diapered state was pretty obvious to one and all thanks to the shirt not being long enough, but he still felt like he shouldn’t be acting that way. In the diapers he felt like a political prisoner, someone stuck in a situation they didn’t want to be in thanks to the idiots in charge, sucking on the pacifier felt more voluntary. Katie didn’t notice any of this. As they walked on down the road she kept talking excitedly, clearly very happy to get a chance to try out her latent parenting skills.
It was a beautiful day, and the sun was shining down without a cloud in the sky to block it as they reached the playground in the centre of the park. Richy clasped Katie’s hand tighter as they approached. He could hear excited laughter and childish voices, he could see little bodies running around whilst the parents sat around the perimeter on benches. He swallowed nervously; his diaper grew a little damp.
“Ready to have fun?” Katie asked with a big toothy smile.
“No.” Richy mumbled.
“Play nice.” Katie warned, “And come back to me if you get thirsty, I’ve got juice boxes in your changing bag.”
Katie opened the metal gate on the perimeter fence of the playground. She pushed it open, it creaked a little as they stepped through and then it swung slowly closed behind them, latching itself. Katie took them to a bench that was unoccupied and shrugged the bags off her shoulder onto the wooden surface. She let go of Richy’s hand as she sat down.
Richy’s reaction was immediate and instinctive. With no one holding his hands he dropped down to his hands and knees so quickly that he let out a little exclamation of pain. The soft asphalt on the ground may have been designed with kids and Littles in mind, but it was still pretty hard. Katie looked down at her brother and pursed her lips.
“Hey, let’s forget that rule for today, OK?” Katie said with a conspiratorial wink, “I want to see you having fun and running around.”
Richy looked at his younger sister nervously. Was it a trick? A test? He slowly got back to his feet and wobbled. It was a strange feeling, to be standing of his own free will. He was still getting used to it when Katie’s hand reached down and pressed the bottom of his shorts, and the diaper underneath, against his body. Katie smiled.
“Alright, off you go.” Katie said, “And don’t worry. I’ll be watching to make sure everyone is nice to you.”
“Can’t I just… stay here?” Richy asked. He wanted to hide away from everyone more than anything.
“No.” Katie tilted her head and gave Richy an almost identical look that he’d seen from his mother. It told him that this was very much not open to negotiation.
Richy turned away. It felt weird to be standing without anyone holding on to him. He looked around at the playground and saw kids running around everywhere. Most weren’t paying him any attention, they were used to seeing adults that had been designated as Littles, if anything their parents would use the sight of Richy to scare them into being good, so they didn’t end up like him. He was basically the bogeyman.
Scanning the area in front of him, Richy saw one person who grabbed his attention. There was one other Little, and this young woman was sitting in the corner of the sandbox. She was so curled in on herself that Richy almost didn’t see her at first, which he assumed was why she was doing it. He started waddling over. As he went, he heard Katie starting to talk to someone else.
Richy took off his shoes and socks at the edge of the sand and then had to fight the urge to drop to his hands and knees. He went across to where the young woman was sitting. She looked very upset, her puffy eyes suggested she had been crying at some point recently though her cheeks were dry. He sat down a couple of feet away and idly dragged his finger through the sand, leaving little divots as he went. He kept glancing at the young woman out of the corner of his eye. The way she was sitting may have hid her face, but it made her diaper a lot more prominent than she probably knew. She was pretty though, despite her obviously sour mood.
“Hey.” Richy said after a couple of minutes when he happened to glance at her at the same moment that she looked back at him.
The girl didn’t reply. She just watched him; her eyes wide and her mouth turned down into a frown. It wasn’t often that Richy interacted with other Littles. Since his own designation he could probably count the number of times it had happened on one hand, so he didn’t blame the girl for not knowing what to say.
“Y-You’re like me?” The girl’s voice was little more than a whisper.
