Joey heard footsteps of an invigilator walking up behind him. The woman stopped to look at something a few desks over, and then carried on, seemingly happy with whatever it was she had seen. Joey looked up for a second to see that they were about a quarter of the way through their time. He wiped his hand against his forehead and felt it come away damp. He was sweating a little, but it had nothing to do with the exam in front of him.
Cough. Cough.
The fake cough from Brad was none-too-subtle. In fact, Joey was sure it was drawing the attention of everyone who heard it, the last thing someone who was trying to cheat would want to do. Brad either didn’t care or didn’t realise how bad his acting was. Joey tried to ignore him. He was having no trouble with the exam, in truth it was one of the easiest he had, but Brad seemed to need the help. Joey looked up and saw and an invigilator looking at Brad and frowning.
Joey wondered if he should tell someone what was going on. He felt that being pressured to cheat should be brought to someone’s attention. He didn’t though. There was a risk, however, that by even alerting the teachers to what was happening that suspicion might fall upon himself. Joey simply didn’t trust the teachers not to penalise him as well as Brad no matter how unfair that might be.
Cough. COUGH.
The second cough was so loud that Joey was looking round before he could think about it. Brad was looking straight at him, seemingly without a care in the world and then, under the desk, held up three fingers.
Joey knew Brad was waiting to be told the answer. He hesitated. People were looking, surely, he would be caught. If Joey was found to be helping someone cheat, he could expect to fail immediately, worse than that, they might rip up all his other exams as well. Joey looked away and back down at his paper.
“Give me the answer…” Brad’s mumbled threat chilled Joey. He could hear it, and so could the other students around him, “Or I’ll send you to the hospital.”
Joey ignored the whispered threat. Maybe he could pretend he hadn’t heard Brad, maybe he could run away as soon as the exam was finished. In a straight up fight he knew he had no chance to beat the bigger guy. Joey had been hoping to find Tracy after the exam and have a go at fixing things between them, that was something that might have to wait.
With three quarters of the time gone, Joey put his pen down. He simultaneously relaxed his bladder and felt a trickle of urine flow into his already wet padding. He shivered a little at the familiar tickling. The good news was that once students had finished their exam they were allowed to be excused. Joey raised his hand for a teacher to come and collect his work. At least he would be getting out of there before Brad and could hopefully get home.
“Finished?” A teacher whispered.
Joey nodded and handed her the paper. The teacher took it and walked away, nodding her head to say that Joey was excused. He pushed his chair back and quickly glanced sideways where he saw Brad glaring at him. He didn’t linger as he hurried, as fast as his padded crotch would allow, to the back of the hall and the doors out into the corridor. At the same time that he had finished, a lot of others were also finishing and there was a constant trickle of people leaving the hall.
Joey had managed to get down the hallway and around the corner. He felt strange. This was very likely the last time he would ever set foot in the school. Joey was almost wistful about it all. He was about halfway to the front doors when he heard an angry shout behind him. He froze up.
“Joey!” Brad’s voice echoed off the walls.
Joey slowly turned around to see Brad advancing towards him. He felt his legs start to shake as he swallowed nervously. The bully looked far from happy. Brad stopped mere inches from Joey who automatically flinched. Brad wasn’t the sort of bully who often beat people up, he didn’t have to. His size and threats were usually enough for him to get anything he wanted.
“I told you to help me.” Brad growled, “Do you think I was joking?”
“I… I didn’t want to get in trouble.” Joey mumbled. He knew he sounded pathetic.
“You just had to use the signals!” Brad looked angrier than Joey had ever seen before, “Now I’m going to fail and they’re going to make me redo the exam over summer.”
Joey was up against the wall. He looked sideways at the exit to the building and wondered if he could make a run for it. It seemed unlikely. Even without the diaper between his legs, Joey wasn’t particularly fast, and Brad worked out.
“M-Maybe I could help you study?” Joey offered lamely.
“Boys? Is everything alright?” Mr. Finch, a Religious Studies teacher had walked around the corner. He was smiling and didn’t seem to see that Joey was feeling threatened.
“Yes, sir.” Brad said with his winning smile, “Just chatting to my good friend Joey.”
“Ah, last day goodbyes, eh?” Mr. Finch nodded, “Alright, good luck in the future you two.”
“Thank you, sir.” Brad said cheerfully.
Joey watched the teacher walking away and wished he had the ability to speak up. He tried to take the opportunity to sidle away from Brad and move towards the building’s exit but a large hand on his shoulder pushed him back against the wall. Brad continued smiling until Mr. Finch was out of sight, then he turned on Joey again, his happy face quickly replaced by something much fiercer.
“Where you trying to go, eh?” Brad asked. His hand remained on Joey’s shoulder.
“J-Just leave me alone… please…” Joey begged.
“You’re pathetic.” Brad shook his head, “I should’ve kicked your ass years ago.”
Joey’s fight or flight response kicked in, and he certainly wasn’t going to fight. In a panic, he tried to pull away from Brad’s grip. They started struggling as Joey tried to put distance between himself and the bully. His clothes were being pulled at and his bag soon ended up on the floor.
“Let me go!” Joey exclaimed. He hated that he could feel tears welling up in her eyes. He really wished he had his pacifier to calm himself down.
Joey managed to shrug off Brad’s hand for a moment. He turned towards the main doors and took two hurried steps before he felt a hand grabbing the bottom of his shirt. Joey felt like he was going to throw up. Only a thin piece of clothing separated his diaper from Brad’s hand. Time seemed to move into slow motion as Brad pulled. There was no doubt Joey’s shirt rose up, even if just a little, to expose what was underneath.
“What the…” Brad said.
“Please… No!” Joey begged as he continued to try and pull free whilst also keeping his modesty, “Just let me go befo-…”
Brad’s hand moved to the waistband of Joey’s pants. With a yank they came down around Joey’s ankles causing him, in his struggle, to stumble and full on to his face. His legs were bare, and his wet diaper exposed to the hallway, exposed to Brad. Joey’s eyes filled with tears as he tried to scramble upwards. He was whimpering like a toddler on the verge of a meltdown.
“Joey, about earlier, I… What the fu-…” Tracy had walked around the corner and was approaching the scene.
“Oh my God!” Brad started laughing. Full on belly laughs that caused him to double over with his hands across his stomach.
“Joey?” Tracy seemed to be in a state of shock.
“A diaper!?” Brad sounded like he was in danger of running out of air, “Holy crap, it’s wet too!”
Joey stood shakily and looked at his girlfriend and his bully, both standing a few feet away, through eyes shimmering with tears. He blinked and the salty liquid ran down his cheeks. He reached down for his pants and finally managed to pull them up. He sobbed a couple of times and then realised he had to get out of there as fast as he possibly could. He turned on his heels and ran through the doors, his loud crying blocking the laughter from Brad.
Joey kept running. He had one hand on the waistband of his pants, holding them up to try and prevent his diaper being displayed to even more people. The other hand wiped his eyes and then reached for his phone. He called his mom and told her he needed picking up. Fran asked what was wrong, but Joey felt unable to say it. He just reiterated that he needed to go home.
Joey waited at a nearby bus stop. He got some strange looks from other people who saw his tears with a mixture of concern and suspicion. Joey found himself feeling glad. They may have thought he was strange but at least none of them were aware of the secret in his pants. He was grateful when his mom’s car pulled up at the bus stop.
“What on Earth happened?” Fran asked as Joey got in the back.
“I don’t want to talk about it…” Joey said as he tried to swallow down a fresh wave of sobs.
Joey caught a look of himself in the rear-view mirror and winced. No wonder people were looking at him weirdly; he had streaks of tears going down his red face and his eyes were very puffy. He looked more like a post-tantrum toddler than he would’ve liked to admit.
“Come on, tell Mommy.” Fran said as she turned in her seat. It seemed she really wasn’t going to drive away until she heard the truth.
Joey wanted nothing more than to get into the privacy of his home. He didn’t care that it meant more baby treatment, at that moment all that mattered was that he got somewhere that no one else could see him and his pathetic state.
“Please…” Joey whined.
“Tell Mommy.” Fran repeated.
Joey hung his head and explained what had happened. He told his mom about the bullying that had been going on for years, he told her about the problems with Tracy and then, slowly and haltingly, he went through the humiliating events of that very day. He could never look up; he didn’t want to see how his mom must’ve been looking at him. The shame of re-telling the story started his crying again.
“Oh, baby…” Fran said with a deep sigh, “Why didn’t you tell me about the bully?”
“B-Because it’s… pathetic!” Joey said around the sobs that still forced their way up and out of his mouth, “I’m eighteen!”
Fran didn’t say anything. She didn’t have to. Joey could practically hear what his mom was thinking. That he wasn’t eighteen, not really. He was more like eighteen months than eighteen years at least. That he was actually a baby, and that he should find solace in going to that place, taking comfort in the things that had brought him such relief from stress recently.
Joey reached for his bag and unzipped it. He rooted around in the bottom until he found what he was looking for and then pulled it out. It didn’t seem to matter that anyone could look in through the car windows and see what he was doing. He lifted his pacifier to his lips and started sucking on it. He let out a deep shaky breath around the mouthguard.
“Good boy.” Fran said, “You just relax. We’ll be home in a minute and then you don’t have to worry about those mean people ever again.”
That was actually a comforting thought. Joey would never need to see or interact with Brad again. Sure, the last image that he had left the bully with was of how pathetic he was, but that hardly seemed to matter now. Even the stuff with Tracy seemed less important all of a sudden. She had seen how pathetic he really was and could make a clean break with him. She would go off to college and find a proper man whilst Joey remained at home, in the playpen where he felt none of the stresses and worries of the world intruding on him.
Back at home, Joey was given a reprieve from having to interact with anyone else. Ben was at school and Lucas was at a daycare, meaning it was just Joey and his mom. After closing the front door, she shoved a hand down Joey’s pants and discovered just how wet he was. She clucked her tongue a few times.
“Go upstairs, baby.” Fran said, “I’ll be up to change you in a minute.”
Joey didn’t complain. He waddled his way up and into the nursery. To save his mom time, he even stripped down to just his diaper. He could see in the full-length mirror just how much his diaper was sagging. It would’ve been the exact view Brad and Tracy had got of him. He shivered and turned away; he didn’t need to set off his emotions again.
Joey hopped up on to the changing table as Fran came in. He laid back and looked at the ceiling as he let his mom’s comforting hands remove the wet diaper, clean him up, and then tape a new disposable around his waist. The dry padding felt so much more comfortable.
“Alright, you can play until we need to go pick up your brothers, alright?” Fran said as she led Joey, now clad in a yellow t-shirt and denim shortalls, back downstairs and into the living room.
Joey didn’t reply. He wasn’t supposed to. He was just a baby after all. Instead, he sucked on the soother in his mouth and did as he was told. He sat down and listened to the playpen gate closing behind him, then he grabbed a box of toy cars and started to play. Anything to distract himself from the memories of that day.
