“Yes?” Fran called as she pushed coat hangers in the closet.

“Is it… safe to come in?” Ben called out.

“Of course.” Fran replied as if she had no idea why it would be anything else.

The door opened and Joey was left with nowhere to hide. He squirmed on the changing table and tried to cover himself up, but the bulky diaper was too big and his hands too small. Ben walked into the room and saw Joey, his mouth dropped open. It took him a moment to recover his bearings.

“Oh, for God’s sake…” Ben squeezed his eyes shut and turned towards Fran, “I thought you said it was safe!”

“It is.” Fran said as she emerged from the closet. She watched as Ben, without looking at Joey, gestured his way with a grossed out look on his face, “Oh, grow up, Ben. You’ve seen Lucas in just a diaper how many times before?”

“That’s very obviously different!” Ben replied with annoyance.

“We talked about this.” Fran said as she closed the closet. She had a hanger in her other hand.

“Doesn’t mean I have to be happy.” Ben muttered. He was studiously avoiding looking in Joey’s direction, “I just wanted to say that Lucas is in the playpen. I’m going to go out and see some friends.”

Having finished what he was saying, Ben was already turning to the exit of the nursery. He had his hand on the knob when Fran spoke again.

“Remember what I said.” Fran said with a very serious tone. Ben stopped in his tracks but didn’t look around, “You’re the man of the house now. You can go out, that’s fine, just remember that you’ll have more responsibilities in future.”

Joey thought his teenage brother wanted to retort. He thought it looked like he clearly had something he wanted to say, but he bit his tongue and without even acknowledging that he heard his mother, he opened the door and left the room. When he closed it again it was with a slightly harder bang than it really required.

Joey heard his mother sigh and give a quick shake of her head before her smile returned. She walked over to the changing table where Joey was still sitting. Every tiny movement produced more crinkles, and the feeling of padding wrapped around his legs was beyond strange. He looked up at his mom.

“Is this…” Joey swallowed, “Is this all… a joke?”

“A joke?” Fran repeated with a frown, “You think I spent all this money on a joke?”

“It’s just really weird.” Joey mumbled.

“I know, baby.” Fran reached out and put a hand on Joey’s bare shoulder, “It’s a big adjustment for everyone. But we’re going to give it a try, OK?”

Joey didn’t see himself as having much of a choice. Everything was changing and he was being swept along in the current. His mom smiled widely as she held out a pacifier. Joey actually felt a sense of relief when he saw it, of everything that had happened, at least that the pacifier was something of a known quantity. He opened his mouth and let his mom press it between his lips. Almost instantly he felt some relief sweep over him.

“And finally, let’s get you covered up before you go downstairs to play with Lucas.” Fran said as she started to pull the hanger out of the clothes, “Gosh, he’s going to be so happy to play with you!”

Joey didn’t feel much excitement at the prospect. He had just heard that Lucas was going down to the playpen, is that where he was going too? If he was really going to be treated like a baby it made sense, where else do you put a baby after all. Joey shook his head. He couldn’t believe he was already trying to give some rationality to a situation that was clearly crazy.

“Arms up.” Fran said.

“Mom, are you sure…” Joey started, his words lisping around his pacifier.

“Joey, if you question everything, we’ll be here forever.” Fran said with a shake of the head, “You’ve been stressed, and we are going to see if this helps. End of story.”

Joey swallowed. He raised his arms slowly but as soon as they were over his head his mom lifted what he thought was a shirt and pulled them over the top. His mom was taller than him by a head, so it wasn’t much of a stretch for her to pull the shirt down over Joey’s face until his head popped out of the hole.

The shirt was surprisingly tight and baby blue in colour. Joey was about to ask if his mom was sure it would fit him when he looked down to see a flap hanging over the front of his diaper. It had three silver poppers on it. It took him a second to really process what he was looking at.

“A… A onesie!?” Joey gasped. He felt his stomach lurch and the pacifier nearly fell out of his mouth.

“You’re going to look absolutely adorable in it!” Fran enthused.

Joey cringed as his mom knelt down and brought the two flaps together between his legs. The poppers were pushed together and when his mom let go of the stretchy cloth, he felt the diaper underneath get pulled up and closer to his body. It made what had already felt like a large cushion of padding feel somehow bigger and thicker than ever.

“A perfect fit!” Fran said as she stepped back and looked Joey up and down.

“Mom…” Joey couldn’t hide the whine in his voice.

“Let’s go.” Fran said as she reached forwards and took his hand, “You’re going to have a thing or two to learn from your baby brother.”

“What?” Joey stumbled forwards. He quickly realised even simply walking in a diaper was different. His thighs were forced apart, and he could feel his butt swaying from side to side behind him.

“How to play.” Fran said matter-of-factly.

Joey didn’t really understand what his mom meant. “Playing” would surely be the easiest part of the changes he had experienced that morning. He knew how to push a toy car or colour a picture, after all.

Taken downstairs and led into the living room, Joey looked down at the floor as he saw Lucas look over. He sucked on his pacifier for comfort as he felt the baby’s eyes look at him. It was only when Fran gave a little tug on his arm that he reluctantly continued forwards and walked through the gate of the playpen. He stood awkwardly in the middle of the fenced in area surrounded by toys on all sides.

“Joey… a baby?” Lucas said as he pointed and tilted his head to the side.

“Yes, he is!” Fran said excitedly, “So I want you to be extra nice to your little brother, OK? Share your toys and teach him your games.”

Joey didn’t think Lucas looked too enthused about sharing his things, but he was certainly interested in having a playmate. The toddler’s eyes never seemed to leave Joey, and he felt like he was being inspected.

There was a bit of an impasse. Joey didn’t know what to say or do and Lucas was still pouting at the idea of sharing his play space. It was alleviated when Fran came back into the room with baby bottles, one for both of the “babies.” Lucas stuck his straight into his mouth whilst Joey stared at it in embarrassment.

“You need to stay hydrated.” Fran said, “So I want you to drink that bottle before I next come in or I’ll feed it to you myself.”

Joey felt his stomach lurch. This was already humiliating enough; he nodded his head. His mom smiled down at him and started heading towards the door.

“Mom?” Joey called out hesitantly.

“I think “mommy” would be more appropriate now, don’t you?” Fran replied as she stopped and turned around.

“I… Erm…” Joey’s train of thought had been derailed by this fresh instruction. There was so much to remember, he wasn’t sure how this was supposed to leave him less stressed, “M-Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?” Fran said indulgently, “What’s the matter?”

“I was just thinking about work.” Joey said. He was turning the bottle round and round in his fingers, “And school, and college.”

“Don’t worry about any of that.” Fran replied, “Mommy will let you know what you need to do. You just focus on playing.”

Joey ducked his head but gave an embarrassed little nod. A second later he was left alone with his brother again. He looked at the way Lucas was tilting the bottle up and sucking on the fake nipple as if it was the most natural thing in the world. He found his fingers fumbling with the pacifier lying in between his legs. It seemed like the two things weren’t so different, if he sucked on the bottle like he did the paci…

Joey was thirsty but he still found it difficult to raise the bottle to his lips. Every time he got halfway, he would suddenly chicken out and look around as if there were people waiting to jump out and announce they had caught him in such a compromising position. Finally, he turned his back to Joey in the small playpen and looked at the television instead. He raised the bottle to his lips before he could stop himself and tasted a drop of sweet juice right on the tip. He paused for only a brief second before pushing the nipple into his mouth and sucking, just as he did for his pacifier. Cold juice exploded into his mouth and coated his tastebuds. He swallowed and sighed as he felt it go down.

Once Joey had started it became difficult to stop. He was thirsty and no amount of liquid seemed to be satisfying him right away. His bottle was noticeably bigger than his baby brothers, another of the strangely oversized things his mother had apparently found online.

As he sucked on his drink and felt himself relaxing, it seemed to have a similar effect as the pacifier, Joey looked at the television. There were a family of Australian dogs playing together and, although it was clearly meant for someone Lucas’s age, Joey had to admit the animation and production was very good. He zoned out and watched the screen and as he alternated sucking juice into his mouth and swallowing it down.

Before Joey knew it, he had finished the drink. He put the bottle down and burped loudly. Despite the rather frosty reaction from Lucas to having a play partner, Joey heard the toddler laugh. He couldn’t stop a bashful smile from appearing on his own face. Once he had put the bottle down, he replaced it with the pacifier, feeling the familiar comfort in the otherwise strange situation. It felt so surreal to be dressed like this, and sitting in the playpen. He kept expecting to wake up back in his bed, but it wasn’t happening. He was having to come to grips with the fact that it was all real.

“Why do you wear diapers?” Lucas asked curiously, breaking Joey out of an almost meditative state he had almost got himself into.

“Because mom… mommy said so.” Joey replied after some hesitation. He realised how pathetic that made him sound, “It’s just a temporary thing…”

“But why?” Lucas asked.

“I’ve been stressed.” Joey said quietly. He was talking around the pacifier and was aware it was making his words sound childish.

“Why?” Lucas continued in the way children are wont to do.

Joey didn’t have easy answers for the boy. He didn’t know why the pacifier made him feel better, he didn’t know why his mom thought all THIS would help, and he certainly didn’t know why he struggled to cope with stresses that other people had no problem with. He looked down between his legs, where the front and back of his onesie came together and the bulge formed by the thick diaper underneath. He felt ridiculous.

“Your a baby.” Lucas decided, “Like me.”

“You’re not a baby.” Joey retorted, “You’ll be a big boy soon.”

Lucas seemed to think about what Joey said for a few seconds. The man could practically see the cogs turning inside Joey’s head.

“So…” Lucas said slowly, “I’m bigger than you?”

Joey opened his mouth and then closed it again. He wanted to say no, but the truth was that their mother had started talking about potty training Lucas. If that started happening, it would make the difference between them even bigger. With Lucas going out of diapers just as Joey went into them it somehow made everything feel even more embarrassing, a fact that Joey was surprised was possible. Instead of answering such a question Joey decided it would be better to just distract his youngest brother.

“Erm, so why don’t you show me a game?” Joey mumbled around his pacifier, “How do you play with these action figures.”

And just like that, Lucas was distracted from his embarrassing line of questions and instead started babbling on about his toys. Joey scooted forwards so he was next to his brother as he started handing out little army men for a mock battle.
