Anna and Ryan were chivvied over to the changing table. Anna was the first to be lifted up. The guards were none too gentle about changing her diaper, she saw Ryan balling his hands up and wanting to intervene, but he didn’t say anything. She was glad. Anything he did say was only likely to get them into more trouble.
A fresh diaper was taped on to Anna and the flaps of the onesie pressed together. She was pulled off the table and stumbled a few crinkling steps before Ryan was told to get on to the padded surface. Anna wanted to look away. It wasn’t that she was embarrassed that her husband had been reduced to having his diaper changed like her, it was his obvious embarrassment. She didn’t want to add to it.
“Don’t get too many men on this table.” The guard dealing with the diaper said with a smirk that transmitted through his words, “If you can be called a man.”
“I’m more of a man than you.” Ryan growled.
Ryan let out a strangled yelp and Anna tried to rush over, but she was held strongly in place. The guard dealing with Ryan had grabbed his balls and although wasn’t squeezing them too tightly, the message was clear. The guard had all the power and Ryan was in no place to argue. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t need to. He just let go after a few seconds and returned to the diaper change.
Once Ryan’s onesie had been done back up, he was let off the table. Anna pulled free from her guard and rushed over to him. He had a red face but caught her in a hug.
“Are you OK?” Anna asked quietly.
“Yeah, don’t worry about me.” Ryan replied.
“Well, isn’t that the sweetest sight.” The guard that was disposing of Ryan’s wet diaper said, “Come along, lovebirds, time for recreation.”
Anna and Ryan were led down a wide hall. Everything was a sterile white and brightly lit, the only other people they saw were other guards going up and down. The corridor had doors on either side, each one locked tightly closed and with a series of letters and numbers etched on to it. Anna guessed they were more “cells” where unlucky people were being tortured in the name of the government. Anna found herself thinking about Jane, she had been through a place like this, maybe this one in particular. Where was she now?
At the far end of the corridor from Anna and Ryan’s room there were a set of double doors. There were two guards posted outside and whilst Anna and Ryan were stopped, one of the guards went over to speak with them. The guard on the door nodded and checked a few settings on a tablet before nodding again. He raised a keycard and scanned it; there was a click as the door unlocked. It was pushed open as Anna was shoved in the back to move forwards.
“Jesus…” Ryan muttered from behind Anna.
The room was huge and decked out just like a nursery. The pastel-coloured walls had guards armed with what looked like tasers every few feet, and they surrounded what must’ve been at least fifty women in onesies and diapers identical to the ones Anna and Ryan were wearing. Anna’s mouth was hanging open as she looked around the room and saw men in white coats walking around and checking on the women every so often, the “care givers”, no doubt.
The room seemed full of toys whilst the backwall was lined with crib and, to the right, was a long line of changing tables, several of which seemed to be constantly occupied. Anna backed up a step until she hit Ryan, his hands went to her shoulders. They had both quickly noticed that, aside from the employees, Ryan was the only male to be seen.
“Have fun, girls.” One of the guards said.
Anna looked around to see their escort leaving the room and closing the door behind them. It clicked shut with finality. They now found themselves stuck together in the nursery and completely unsure of what to do.
“Is this what Finishing School is?” Ryan muttered.
“I… I don’t know.” Anna replied.
Anna was confused. She had heard the horror stories of Finishing Schools; she had seen the effects they could have at close hand. Jane may not have been in one for very long, but it completely broke her, it had taken medical intervention to “fix” her. This was a nursery. Sure, it wasn’t where Anna wanted to be, but it didn’t look too different to the one she had found herself in back at the college.
“What do we do?” Ryan asked quietly.
“I don’t know.” Anna said again. She had no answers.
“Ah, new arrivals?” A man started walking towards them. He was older and smiled in a kindly way. Pretty much the first face which didn’t show utter contempt that Anna had seen since they had arrived.
“We ju-… Hey!” Ryan started to speak but as the man reached them, he automatically reached down to squeeze the padding over Ryan’s crotch. Ryan jumped back.
“Procedures, you understand.” The man said.
Anna was more used to such invasions of her privacy. When the man’s hand reached down to her crotch, she simply closed her eyes and waited for it to be withdrawn. They were both dry, of course. They’d only just been changed after all.
“Our first male guest.” The man said as he peered curiously at Ryan, “I hear you’ve been causing a spot of bother.”
“Please, what is this place?” Anna asked.
“Is it… Finishing School?” Ryan added.
“Finishing School?” The man chuckled, “They must really have given you a fright, hmm? No, no, this isn’t Finishing School. Do you think such a place would have so much fun available for the girls?”
The man’s arms spread out as if to show off the activities on display. Sure, for a small child it would’ve likely been very exciting, but it didn’t hold any interest for Anna. That said, she still let out a smile. Just knowing they weren’t in the dreadful place they’d been threatened with was enough to ease their minds just a little. If they had been in Finishing School, chances where they were done for, since they weren’t, it seemed to Anna like it meant the powers that be still had a plan to use them.
“Well, on you go then.” The man said as he stepped aside, “I’m Mr. Roberts, by the way. I’m in charge here, if you need anything, just cry.”
Anna stepped uncertainly forwards. Ryan was staying as close as possible to her, she felt bad. As new and scary as this was for her it must’ve been a hundred times worse for her husband who had never experienced any of this first hand.
“What is this place?” Ryan asked in hushed tones.
“I don’t know.” Anna replied simply.
“Well, what do we do?” Ryan continued. Anna looked at him and saw he was bright red. Of course, even though Ryan had dispensed with any of the toxic masculinity that plagued Sallas, he was still a guy who probably didn’t like being humiliated in front of so many people, especially the men.
“Well, would you prefer finger painting or building blocks?” Anna asked.
“I’m being serious!” Ryan exclaimed.
“And so am I.” Anna turned to face her husband and took both his hands in hers, “Look, I don’t know where we are, but you heard Mr. Roberts, right? This ISN’T Finishing School.”
“So?” Ryan asked.
“So…” Anna said, stretching the word out, “If we’re not in Finishing School then they still see some use for us. Sooner or later, they will be around to tell us what that use is. In the meantime… I guess we play.”
“Play?” Ryan looked at Anna as if he had never heard the word before, “Anna, I don’t know how to do that…”
“It’ll be OK.” Anna said as she took her husband’s hand, “Just follow my lead.”
Learning that the pair of them wasn’t in a Finishing School had significantly lifted Anna’s mood. Now that she knew she wasn’t going to have her brain wiped she was able to relax, at least a small amount.
Anna looked at the room at large. There were quite a few women in it, a lot of them seemed, at least at first glance, to be totally regressed. Realising that the longer they stood there, the more attention they brought to themselves, Anna took Ryan’s hand and pulled him forward. His reluctance was obvious with every step.
“Here. We can sit down and do some art.” Anna said as she headed towards the tables set up with finger paints.
“Anna…” Ryan didn’t seem happy with this way of things.
“Just sit down and we can talk.” Anna said.
Anna sat in a seat and pulled some paper towards her. She wasn’t usually this proactive about playing, but then she didn’t usually have someone who really needed her to take responsibility. She didn’t want them to draw attention to themselves. If they refused to take part, it could easily end badly. The daycare at Ryan’s college was still fresh in her mind, and she knew things could’ve gone a lot worse for her there as well.
“Anna, I don’t…” Ryan started.
Anna pulled a piece of paper across the table and placed it in front of Ryan. There was paint in between them. Anna looked up at the other inhabitants at the table, most had already gone back to their art but one seemed to be taking more of an interest.
“Just… paint.” Anna said.
Ryan looked very confused. Anna moved first, dipping her finger into some paint and putting it on the paper in front of her. In truth, she wasn’t particularly happy about having to do what she was doing, but the relief that she wasn’t in a Finishing School was enough to make her feel like she was on cloud nine.
The question then became: What would happen next? Anna knew the government took a zero-tolerance approach to anything it considered to be terrorism. The Rose Resistance was considered to be a group of criminals, helping them could have dire consequences. The fact that they weren’t already locked up suggested the couple still had some value. Maybe it was as tools of propaganda, maybe it was for information, the worst part of it all was that they could only sit there and wait.
“I recognise you!” The woman who had been paying more attention to Anna and Ryan suddenly spoke up.
“You do?” Anna frowned. She was certain she had never seen this woman in her life.
“Uh huh.” The woman said with a big smile and a nod, “On the TV!”
“Oh.” Anna replied.
Of course. It was a fact she wasn’t yet used to. That most people in the country recognised her face, saw her as the happy perfect example of what a Sallasian woman could and should be. The woman was still staring at Anna as if she were awestruck. She was pretty, with freckles either side of a small nose, deep green eyes and long blonde hair that seemed to go most of the way down her back. She also seemed like one of the few women that hadn’t been regressed quite as much as the others, though she was still obviously thickly padded under her onesie. Anna realised she could be a font of information.
“What’s your name?” Anna asked.
“Georgie.” The woman replied, “I know you’re Anna… and that’s Ryan!”
Ryan seemed determined not to look up. He was embarrassed about being there, understandably. It was doubtful that many men found there way into a place like this, certainly not on the padded side of things.
“So, erm, what is this place?” Anna asked, looking to distract the woman and save Ryan from having to answer the obvious question of why he was there.
“Daddy calls it Daycare.” Georgie said, “It’s for the girls of gover-… goberne-…”
“Government?” Anna suggested when it became obvious Georgie was struggling. Anna wondered if she had spent some time in a Finishing School or if her partial regression was the product of her husband’s efforts.
“Uh huh. Mostly.” Georgie nodded enthusiastically, “The important men.”
“So, they send girls here whilst they work?” Anna asked.
“Yep.” Georgie replied, “Sometimes Daddy sends me here if he wants time alone too. It’s OK, there’s lots of toys and stuff.”
Anna smiled at Georgie through her disgust. So many women just casually put away when not needed as if they were toys. So much potential being lost, women who could’ve been smart or athletic or brilliant in any number of ways being made into little dolls. Anna balled her hands up and felt for a second like she might explode before Ryan distracted her, with a hand placed on hers.
“Stay calm.” Ryan whispered.
Anna looked at her husband and, for a moment, was about to explode at him, was about to say it was easy for him to tell her to remain calm when he didn’t know what it was like for her. She looked down at the way Ryan was dressed and being forced to act, and she felt the anger abate. He did know.
Anna nodded and then turned back to the table. She had to remember the nursery back at college, she had to remember how she got through that and do the same thing again. It was scary, she had no idea when they would be getting out, but she had to clear her mind. Dan needed her. For as adrift as she felt, he was even more lost. He may not have been the alpha male that Sallas wanted, but he was still being reduced in position and, no doubt, was humiliated by it.
