Anna felt the cramp twisting at her insides. She winced and leaned to the side slightly from her place, sitting on the floor of the hot television studio. Behind her, Ryan was sat at the end of a couch, next to him was a low glass table and then on the other side were the two presenters with their fake tans and even faker smiles. Anna had no idea which one was which, she never watched daytime television if she could help it, too worried that she would see a commercial starring herself and Ryan.
On the other side of the small playpen that Anna sat in, there were a dozen or more men bustling around. A few were operating the cameras, others were whispering into headsets and adjusting various dials and knobs, they seemed bored. Anna moved the toy fire truck in front of her, keenly aware of the camera pointed directly at her. The interview had been going for five minutes; Anna was listening to Ryan struggling to answer questions. At one point, just as the show paused for a commercial break, Ryan and Anna looked at each other. They both had the same question: Where was The Rose Resistance?
The longer Anna was sat in the playpen, the more concerned she became. Had the plot to instigate trouble failed? Had Thorn and the others been captured? Was it all a trick all along? If Anna hadn’t been in so much physical discomfort, she might’ve been even more concerned that everything seemed to be proceeding normally.
“We understand Anna wasn’t always quite so docile…” One of the almost identical hosts said to Ryan.
“Yeah, I mean…” Ryan was flustered. He was torn between not wanting to upset Anna and trying to toe the party line, “There were some problems, but nothing that couldn’t be sorted out with the help of some intensive treatment.”
“Oh, why don’t you tell us about that?” The other presenter said.
Anna listened to Ryan talking about the daycare. He was careful to leave out certain things, like the fact he had been kept there as well and instead described the “miraculous” improvement in his wife’s attitude. Anna tuned out again. There was nothing there she wanted to hear, besides, the issue in her tummy was reaching criticality. It didn’t matter if there were millions of people watching, she desperately needed to relieve herself. She got up on to her knees with her butt stuck out behind her.
“Cut to camera two!” Anna heard someone with a clipboard urgently whispering. She looked over her shoulder and saw a red light blink on the camera trained on her butt.
Anna had just a couple of seconds to feel humiliated as she turned to face away from the camera and closed her eyes.
“Zoom in! Zoo-…” The producer was suddenly cut off.
A sudden explosion seemed to shake the whole building. There were shouts of alarm and people were suddenly running everywhere. Inside the playpen, the surprise had caused Anna to push down, and she unceremoniously filled the back of her diaper with a messy sludge, the suppositories stimulating her bowels and causing the back of the padding to bulge out underneath her dress.
Anna didn’t have time to even think about that though. The explosion had happened behind her. She whipped around and saw that a section of the wall had been blown apart, there was rubble and debris strewn across the studio, miraculously it seemed like no one had been significantly harmed.
“What the hell!?” Shouted one of the protestors.
Alarms started ringing and people were running for the exits. Anna was still squatting down, unsure of what to do, when she looked over at Ryan she saw a similar look of shock on his face. Then she heard more voices, these ones female.
“Secure the broadcast room!” Said an authoritative voice, “Restrain the men!”
Anna got to her knees, her freshly mushy rear end bulging out behind her. She was looking into the dust and debris as women with guns and dark green uniforms hurried inside. In the middle of them was a woman with deep red hair. Anna knew instantly who she was looking at despite never setting eyes on her before.
“Thorn?” Anna muttered. There was no way anyone could hear her.
The two presenters were being led away, their arms raised. Thorn saw the playpen and a smile twisted across her face. She marched forwards occasionally pointing out a task for one of the other women to do, there were at least a couple dozen of them. Anna noticed that none of them were padded as far as she could tell.
“Anna.” Thorn said as she reached the playpen, “We meet at last.”
Anna was still in shock somewhat, still reeling from what she was seeing and hearing. She looked out to the cameras, all of them pointing at the floor, their operators having either run away or getting corralled together by The Rose Resistance soldiers.
“We’re not going to hurt anyone.” Thorn said quietly, answering an unasked question, “Unless they give us cause to. Are you ready?”
“Huh?” Anna grunted dumbly.
“The speech.” Thorn said. Anna couldn’t take her eyes off the pistol holstered at the woman’s waist, “Once you deliver it, we need to get you out of here. We don’t have long.”
Ryan had briefly been caught up with all the men being led away but having finally established his identity, he had leapt over the side of the playpen and rushed up behind Anna. The stinky woman jumped as she felt his hands on her shoulders.
“Are you OK?” Ryan asked quickly.
“Y-Yeah.” Anna’s brain was finally catching up to the situation at hand, “I’m ready.”
“Excellent.” Thorn smiled and nodded her head, it was as if this armed insurrection was nothing but a bit of fun for her, “Just give us a minute to secure the place. We need to make sure we’re broadcasting.”
Anna slowly stood up. Her legs were shaking. She was watching as the studio was taken over, it had clearly been an event The Rose Resistance had practiced often. Rose had a walkie-talkie in her hand and was giving various orders. Anna was shocked to hear, from the other end, what sounded like gunshots. Thorn saw Anna’s surprise.
“You didn’t expect they’d let us just take you, right?” Thorn laughed, “We’ve launched attacks across the city, it will hopefully buy us some time.”
“All this… for me?” Anna asked. She was flabbergasted that anyone would go to such trouble, put themselves in danger, perhaps even get killed.
“You are the best weapon we could have.” Thorn said simply, “No one has the experiences you do; no one can deliver the message of what it’s really like in Sallas like you. You’re a celebrity, and once you are out of here the whole world will want to hear what you have to say.”
Anna swallowed. She didn’t feel like a celebrity, or someone that anyone else would listen to. She was just… Anna. She felt sure that Thorn was overestimating the power she could have, certain that no one would care about whatever message she had to deliver to the outside world. At the same time, she wasn’t going to say any of that, not with Thorn directing her troops and about to try and get her out.
“We don’t have enough people or firepower to hold on forever.” Thorn continued, “Once we’ve got you out the teams are going to melt away, back into the woods. We are an army, but we need more weapons, money and people. That’s what we need you to get us.”
“I’ll try…” Anna said cautiously.
Thorn smiled at her and nodded her head. Just as she opened her mouth again the radio in her hand crackled to life. Thorn held it up to her ear, Anna couldn’t quite make out what the voice was saying but Thorn’s face was tense. Anna felt Ryan rub her shoulders and she looked back and smiled at him.
“Alright, just give us a few more minutes.” Thorn said. She lowered the radio and then looked to Anna, “Alright, you’re up. We’ve got control of the station, but don’t take too long.”
Anna nodded. She stood up with some help from Ryan who then stood off to the side, Thorn was keen for Anna to deliver the message with no one else distracting from it. Anna tried to remember exactly what she had planned to say, her brain was struggling to hold on to any information. Thorn stood next to a camera which was controlled by one of her soldiers, its unblinking eye rose up from the ground and pointed at Anna. A second later the red light came on.
“Go.” Thorn whispered from off to the side.
Anna swallowed anxiously as she stood in the middle of the playpen. There was chaos all around her, it seemed ridiculous that she would be expected to deliver a speech. She looked to the side, at the large hole in the wall, the one she assumed she would soon be running through. Standing in front of the camera, it may well end up being one of the last times she is seen by the public. If things go bad, this was the last impression she would leave of herself. She wasn’t going to let it be of her looking confused in her stinky diaper. She looked up at the camera and steeled herself.
“Sallas…” Anna started, “You know me as Anna Manning, a girl like many who might be watching this broadcast, used by the government to tell you all how you should behave. But I’m something else, something so much more than Anna Manning.”
Anna was going totally off-script. She glanced at Thorn who was siling and nodding, encouraging her to continue with her heartfelt words. She took a deep breath and continued.
“I’m more than Anna Manning, more than a wife, and more than a daughter” Anna continued, “I am a woman. A woman with hopes and dreams just like millions of others, a woman who has so much more potential than just household help for my husband. You have all been lied to by a government trying to keep control.”
Anna paused again. She thought about the millions of people on the other side of the lens. The men and women throughout the country who were, presumably, watching her. She’d always wanted to feel like she was doing some worthwhile, something that could make a difference, and it finally felt like she was getting that opportunity.
“Men of Sallas, it is time to give women equality and end this persecution!” Anna stated with real feeling, “Women of Sallas, it is time to take the power back! You are lesser than no man! Take control of your lives! It’s time to join the-…”
Anna suddenly noticed the light beneath the camera had blinked out. She looked at Thorn, who had been standing near to it and beaming. Her walkie-talkie crackled into life. She listened to it and then swore.
“We have to go.” Thorn said, “They’ve cut the power.”
“To the building?” Ryan asked.
“To the city.” Thorn replied, “They really don’t want people hearing your message.”
“Damn it…” Anna slumped.
“Hey, don’t worry.” Thorn reached out and patted Anna’s shoulder, “What you have just done is drop a large rock in the pond, we’re going to be the ripples. You’ve just told everyone that another way is possible, this is a historic moment.”
Anna looked at Ryan who, though pale-faced, nodded back at her. She took a deep breath and immediately regretted it. Her poopy diaper was leaking its smell into the air around her. She looked down and Thorn clearly saw what she was thinking.
“There’s no time.” Thorn said, “We have to leave now.”
Anna really didn’t want to go on this potentially dangerous escape in a soiled diaper, but it didn’t seem like she was going to have a choice in the matter. Ryan had grabbed her arm and was nodding his head towards the open gate of the playpen. Anna nodded and hurried forwards, waddling as fast as the thick diaper would let her.
As they approached the hole in the wall Anna could hear shooting on the streets outside. She was momentarily blinded as they left the dark studio and stepped out into the natural light, the street was deserted but the gunfire sounded close. Thorn came sauntering out, not going faster than a quick walk as she went down to the hastily parked vehicles, many of the women who had stormed the studio were following.
It was like a wave that Anna was swept up in, an unstoppable tide of momentum that she could only go along with, and she was thankful, she had the feeling that without this external forward momentum she would be frozen to the spot. There were a lot of people shouting and jostling. Anna held on to Ryan’s hand as firmly as possible through the chaos that was happening all around them.
“Get in.” Thorn said as she opened the door to the car.
Anna was halfway into the car, her big, discoloured diaper sticking out behind her as she bent over, when a large explosion suddenly shook the ground. Anna felt someone diving on top of her and a split-second later the car and everything around it was showered with debris.
“Damn it, they were supposed to wait for my signal!” Thorn grumbled.
“I think they’re taking the station back, ma’am.” Replied another soldier, one now in possession of the walkie-talkie.
“Already?” Even under the body that was still lying on top of her, and pressing the stinky padding against her skin, Anna could hear the concern in Thorn’s voice. It was the first time she had sounded like she wasn’t in full control of an incredibly chaotic situation.
“Yes, Ma’am.” The soldier with the radio replied, “The outer perimeter has been forced back.”
“Alright…” Thorn paused, “Stay here. Everybody stays here. I’ll go with Anna and Ryan alone, if they work out that’s what we’re doing they should come after us.”
“But… If they go after you…” The woman started hesitantly.
“We’ll be fine.” Thorn said. Her brief dalliance with sounding unsure already banished, “Come on, we all knew there would be casualties.”
