“It’s your turn, Emma.” Ollie said.

“Huh? Oh.” I had been daydreaming again.

It was Friday and that meant it was family game night. It wasn’t something I was a particularly big fan of, but it wasn’t optional. It was a family tradition that had been going on for as long as I could remember. It was one of the few times in a week where dad would interact with the rest of us without something else competing for his time and attention. Every Friday night one of us would get to pick a game and spend some quality time together. It was usually dad or Ollie that got to pick. I always tried to suggest we play something exciting, like a role-playing game where we could imagine ourselves in some fantasy setting, they always suggested something a lot more dull. As usual, we were now taking it in turns to roll the dice and move little tokens around the board.

I picked up the dice and sent them scattering across the game. I moved my token the number of spaces it showed. Fun.

My mind was elsewhere. It often was these days. I had a lot to think about, such as Nicole who was rapidly outgrowing the rest of us girls and Jacob who never seemed to be far from my mind even if I would have preferred that he was.

“So, kids, how’s school?” Dad asked.

“Fine.” Ollie replied, “I got an A on my English paper.”

“That’s my boy.” Dad said proudly as he ruffled Ollie’s hair, “And how about training?”

“Coach says I might have a chance at a scholarship.” Ollie smiled, “Apparently we’ve been getting some big-time scouts at our games.”

“Fantastic!” Dad replied, “The whole world’s your oyster, son. You can be and do whatever you set your mind too.”

“What about you, Emma?” Mom asked. She was sitting opposite me in her apron. She’d already cooked dinner so I wasn’t sure why she still felt the need to wear it.

“Oh, you know, same as usual…” I muttered.

What more could I say? Was I supposed to proudly tell my family how I was learning to look after a little brat or becoming a better cook? Because I didn’t consider those things to be proud of. I wanted to have the same things to tell my parents as Ollie, I wanted to excel. My mind turned back to Nicole who was very likely to be getting that opportunity to lift herself out of the humdrum future that awaited the rest of us.

“And how are things with Liam?” Dad asked gruffly, “I spoke to his Dad a couple of days ago. Liam seems like a good man; you could do a lot worse.”

“I could do a lot better.” I replied before I could stop myself. Dad never liked what he called my “smart mouth”, it often got me into trouble.

“He’s a good man.” Dad repeated with a tone that suggested I wasn’t to argue, “He’s got a good future ahead of him. He’ll be able to take care of you.”

The conversation moved on as people took their turns with the game. Of course, no one actually cared about what I was doing in school. They all knew it was a waste of time, the only thing my parents had an interest in was me getting married and off their hands. To be a good little housewife. More than anything, that was why I envied Nicole.

“You know, Nicole might be moving into classes with the boys.” I said.

“Really?” Mom shook her head, “I don’t agree with it. A woman’s place is in the home.”

“Couldn’t agree more.” Dad said, “Women and the workplace just don’t mix.”

I was disgusted yet unsurprised by my parents’ attitude. It was at times like this that it was hard not to see my mom as a traitor to both me and women in general. Maybe she WAS happy as a housewife, but that didn’t mean it was the only thing a woman could be.

“You know, I think I could have a chance in getting into the boys’ classes too…” I said as I rolled the dice again and moved my token, “If I was given a chance.”

I looked up from the board to see my parents looking at each other with faint amusement. I pursed my lips in annoyance. These were the people supposed to be supporting me and, instead, they were my biggest obstacles. I could only imagine where I might’ve been had they encouraged me to potty train and otherwise develop, rather than keeping me in place and frowning on any attempt to better myself. Maybe I would still be the super clumsy girl tripping over her feet or maybe not, the point was that I would never know because they didn’t support me.

“You could’ve tried potty training me…” I muttered, “Given me a chance, at least.”

Again, my parents glanced at each other but said nothing. I pursed my lips. They could be utterly infuriating. I knew it was usually the husband that helps his wife potty train but I wasn’t going to marry and subject myself to a life of servitude, so they could’ve helped me, it wasn’t THAT unusual to have at least some potty training done at home. Even Zoe, who seemed to have no ambition at all, had told me that her parents had offered her the opportunity for some rudimentary potty training. It was beyond aggravating that my parents didn’t even take what I said seriously. When it was my next turn, I rolled the dice a little too hard and knocked down my brother’s token before the two dice fell off the table on to the floor.

“Hey!” Ollie complained, “She did that on purpose!”

“I didn’t!” I countered equally loudly.

“Now, Ollie, you know your sister doesn’t have the coordination to aim like that.” Dad said sincerely.

That only annoyed me even more. I hadn’t meant to hit Ollie’s piece, but I HAD meant to throw the dice as hard as I did. Dad picked them up and handed them back to me with a warning look. I rolled my eyes and dropped the dice on to the middle of the board before moving. I’d actually rolled enough to catch up and overtake my brother.

“Emma’s cheating!” Ollie suddenly exclaimed.

“Huh?” I frowned, “I rolled a five and I moved five.”

“You moved six!” Ollie accused.

“No, look…” I went back to my space and started moving my token forwards one space at a time, “One, two, three…”

“You started on this one.” Ollie pointed to the square before the one I started counting from.

“No, I didn’t.” I frowned, “I was here.”

Ollie and I started to talk over each other as we argued. I didn’t really care about the stupid game, but I DID care about being cheated. We carried on for fifteen seconds or so before dad cleared his throat loudly.

“Ollie’s right. You started back there.” Dad said as he tapped the space Ollie had been saying.

“I didn’t!” I complained. I looked at mom and it seemed like she agreed with me but didn’t say anything.

“And for trying to cheat I think you’ll only get one die for the next five turns.” Dad continued.

My hands balled up and my teeth clenched. Tears started filling my eyes. I didn’t deal with injustice well and I certainly felt like I was being targeted right then. I watched as dad moved my token back and then skipped my turn. I wasn’t allowed to get ahead, not even in a board game.

“Get us some drinks, would you?” Dad said to mom as he picked up the dice.

Mom started to get up immediately. Like a robot that had just had new instructions inputted she was getting ready to hurry off and do as she was told. To everyone’s surprise, Ollie stood up too.

“I’ll get them.” Ollie said.

Before anything else could be said he was walking off towards the kitchen. We all watched him go in shock. I think it was the closest any of us had seen to him doing a chore. Mom looked confused, maybe even worried, that she wasn’t doing the task.

“How thoughtful.” Dad said with a little nod of appreciation. I noted that was more than I got when I was told to do something for dad.

We continued playing up until Ollie’s next turn. He returned with drinks for all of us. A beer for dad, a soda for himself, and two baby bottles filled with juice for me and mom. I took mine without saying thanks and started drinking. I hated using the bottles but complaining was pointless and just likely to end up with me having a sore butt.

“Whose turn is it?” Ollie asked.

“Yours.” Dad replied.

Ollie rolled the dice and continued the game. I hadn’t realised how thirsty I had been and ended up drinking the whole bottle very quickly. The game continued and it never got very exciting. Half an hour later we were getting near to the end with Ollie and dad far ahead of me and mom. I was just looking forward to the whole thing being over so I could try to get some time on the computer or…

There was a rumble deep in my belly. I thought little of it except to lament that I was likely to have messy diaper before bedtime. When it was my next turn to roll the dice though, I felt another rumble that started in my upper belly and then descended south through my digestive system. It was loud enough for the rest of my family to hear, and I put a hand over my tummy.

I rolled the dice and moved my piece, not that it mattered since I wasn’t going to be allowed to overtake anyone, then felt another rumble which came with the feeling that something was shifting inside me. What was coming seemed increasingly like it was going to happen sooner rather than later, my limited ability to stop or slow down accidents would do nothing to help me. I looked up and saw my brother watching me. His smirk told me all I needed to know.

“You…” I started before I was forced to stop by a pain in my tummy.

“What was that?” Dad asked as he looked up from the board.

I desperately didn’t want to fill my diaper at the table with everyone watching me. The choice was made for me before I could even think about it though. Another rumble turned into a cramp and a massive increase in pressure. A second later I could feel my bowels starting to empty. With a hopeless moan I tilted sideways to give my diaper more room and very quickly felt a semi-solid avalanche filling the back of the disposable up, the warm mush spreading out against my skin and the padding.

I held my breath and pushed. I tried not to make it too obvious what was going on, but little soft exhalations escaped my mouth, and I was making a face my family knew only too well. I blushed furiously as the first hint of the smell in my diaper started escaping into the air around me. It was soon over, my bowels apparently emptying everything they had. I slowly sat back down, closing my eyes as I felt the poop get squashed between my body and the chair beneath me. I felt the poop oozing as I settled into it.

“Ready for potty training, huh?” Ollie teased. He leaned in closer to me and whispered, “Want another bottle?”

As my parents started chuckling, I felt tears prick my eyes. I jumped to my feet, my sticky diaper remaining stuck to my butt like adhesive. I pointed at Ollie angrily.

“This is his fault!” I exclaimed, “He put something in my drink!”

“Woah, calm yourself down, Emma.” Dad said with warning. I was too angry to listen.

“I didn’t do anything.” Ollie stated calmly. His words said something but his expression when he turned to look at me said quite another.

“Sit down, baby.” Mom said soothingly.

“I’m not a baby!” I yelled.

Everything seemed to go into slow motion. I could see my mom’s face looking anxious whilst my dad looked annoyed that I was making fuss. Ollie, meanwhile, was leaned back in his seat and enjoying the chaos he had caused. My anger had taken control of me. I couldn’t hold myself back. Leaning forwards, I grabbed the edge of the table that the board game was sitting on. I could see my family’s expressions changing as I started to lift, I couldn’t have stopped myself even if I wanted to. And I didn’t want to.

Everything returned to normal speed as I flipped the table. The board, all the pieces, drinks and everything else started to go flying. Dad pushed his chair back rapidly to avoid being hit. Mom shrieked like an old-fashioned cartoon woman seeing a mouse, and Ollie barely moved. He had lit the match and was now enjoying the fireworks.

Everything clattered to the floor. The table landed with a bang, and I was left standing in front of it, looking around at shocked faces. Very quickly, the anger faded away and only left me with the sinking feeling of what was inevitably going to come next. Dad’s face quickly contorted into fury. I went to run away but Ollie stuck out a foot. I tripped almost immediately and went stumbling forwards until my centre of gravity caused me to topple over. I landed on my front, thankfully not making the disaster in my diaper too much worse. I quickly looked around at Ollie with a glare.

“Get over here right now.” Dad said in harsh tones.

“Need some help, sis?” Ollie asked with a smirk.

I was about to say no when my brother reached down with both his hands and grabbed my wrists. He pulled me up so that I was back on my feet again. I knew I wasn’t big, but Ollie’s strength surprised me. I glared at him. My frustration wanting me to hit him. He normally stayed as an observer; I didn’t like that he was now getting the authority over me to take part in what was clearly about to be a punishment.

My brother let go of my arm and, whilst I considered running away again, I bowed my head and sighed. This was a game that had been played countless times as I grew up. I did something to get in trouble, usually thanks to Ollie’s poking, then I ran away and made things worse for myself. This time I was going to cut out the middleman. I walked around the seats to where my father sat. As soon as I was in range, he pulled me down over his lap. The fact my diaper was stinky didn’t seem to have any effect on him.

With the rest of the family watching, I braced myself. My legs hung in the air behind me, and I covered my face with my hands. I knew I was going to cry, and I hated crying. The anticipation was always the worst. Dad liked to let me think about what was about to happen.

Without warning dad’s hand was flung into the back of my diaper. The padding crashed against my skin squashing the mess inside and sending it all over the disposable. I squealed in pain. The padding could only do so much to cushion the blow. It wasn’t the pain that made me cry, it was never the pain. No, what really made me cry when I was being punished like this was the humiliation and the unfairness of it all.

I wanted to be a fully developed adult. I wanted to be treated as an equal of the men, I was desperate to be respected and valued. Yet I just couldn’t do it. My body betrayed me, and my emotions were always out of control. I knew I would’ve been so much happier if I was at either end of the spectrum. Either a “nice little girl” who only lived to serve men and glowed with pride when she was a good girl, or a woman with fully developed motor skills who could look after herself and get a job.

Instead, I was trapped in the middle. Neither happy with my lot in life whilst also completely unable to improve things. Cursed to want something it felt like I would never get whilst never being happy with what seemed to be my destiny. All of that, more than the pain of the spanking which continued for a couple of minutes, was the reason why I was blubbering. It was why when I was allowed to stand back up, I had tears and snot running down my face.

“Get her changed and put her to bed.” Dad instructed mom.

“Come on, baby.” Mom said as she quickly stood up.

When mom took my hand, it was a lot gentler than either of the men had been. I didn’t resist. I just sobbed and moved my spare hand back over by sore butt as I was led to the stairs and up to my nursery. Another family game night ended with me waddling away with a red butt. It seemed more often than not that was how they went.

“And you’re grounded!” Dad yelled as I was taken out of the room, “Until further notice.”
