I was tired out and a little sweaty after my walk to the cinema. Liam had offered me a lift but there was no chance I was about to accept that. He would’ve insisted but I lied and said my dad wanted to drop me off. Just about the only authority a man accepts is the authority of a man higher up the food chain.

I had designed it so I arrived as late as I dared to. I wanted to get to the movie just before the start and then leave right after it ended, spending the least amount of time possible with Liam. I had, however, forgotten how unpleasant simply walking around outside could be. It was the third time that I received a wolf whistle that I started to feel unsafe, thankfully I was only a block away from the cinema by then.

“Emma! We were starting to get worried!” Zoe wrapped her arms around me in a brief hug, “Jacob was worrying that you’d been kidnapped or something!”

“No such luck.” I muttered.

“You look nice.” Jacob said with the smile that melted my heart every time.

I snorted. I had deliberately done my best to NOT look nice. I had dressed in my least revealing long skirt and a pink shirt that clashed horribly with it. I wanted to look as unsexy as possible and felt I’d done a very good job of it. If mom and Dad knew why I was leaving the house they would’ve insisted on a very different outfit. I just counted myself lucky that they didn’t ask too many questions. Ollie had a music recital going on, so their attention was elsewhere.

“Liam’s just inside.” Jacob said, “Shall we head in? The movie starts in five minutes.”

I nodded. Jacob opened the door and held it so Zoe could head in. I looked down the street and wondered if there were any excuses I could make to just walk away. It didn’t seem likely.

“Emma?” Jacob said, “The entrance is this way.”

I snorted with laughter even as my face started going red. He wasn’t laughing though, just smiling at me in the way he so often did, the smile that seemed to attract me like a magnet. That made me want to confess what a mistake I had made in turning him down and-…

“Emma?” Jacob said again, “You might want to come inside.”

I was jolted out of my thoughts and looked around to see a family behind me. I was blocking the doorway. With a mumbled apology I look studiously down at the floor as I quickly stepped inside and out of the way. I was pretty sure I heard the Dad of the family mutter something about “stupid girls” as he went past.

The cinema’s lobby and screens were up on the second floor. I followed Jacob and nearly tripped over several steps. it wasn’t just my poor coordination that was giving me trouble either, not with Jacob right in front of me.

“Ah, there they are.” Zoe said as we climbed the final few steps and emerged into a large foyer. She was struggling to hold on to several large buckets of popcorn and drinks. Jacob hurried over to help her.

The room was bustling with activity. In front of us there was a counter that was packed with all sorts of candy and other snacks whilst behind all that there were several drinks machines. Standing between the confectionary and the sodas were a few teenage employees who looked overworked. I couldn’t help but feel jealousy. The people working at the cinema were mostly either my age or younger and doing something I would never get the opportunity to.

“There’s my girl!” Liam called out. It looked like he was returning from the bathroom.

Liam kept closing the distance and, too late, I realised he was doing more than just greeting me. I took one step backwards and wobbled dangerously before his arms were wrapped around me in a hug I wanted no part of. I felt a hand go down and cup my diaper against my butt with no thought about the fact that we were in public.

“Get… off!” I exclaimed.

Liam instead leaned in for a kiss, but I was able to avoid it by leaning away until I was at a very awkward angle. I could only go so far; my top half was practically horizontal and the odious man’s lips were so close to my cheek. I closed my eyes and braced myself.

“Hey, Liam?” Jacob’s voice caused everything else to freeze, “We should probably head to the screen. We’re running a little bit late.”

I waited with bated breath until Liam suddenly, and rather unceremoniously, let go of me. I stumbled sideways but thankfully a nearby promotional stand kept me upright. I took a few deep breaths and found I was shaking a little. I had always imagined myself being so much stronger if I found myself in a situation like that. I’d always imagined fighting off the man, kicking him between the legs, for instance. Instead, I froze up and did little more than limply lean away.

“Alright, we’ll have plenty of time later.” Liam said as he leered at me.

The others walked on ahead. I followed, aware now that plenty of other people in the lobby were looking at me. Some were doing it with sympathy, many more, mostly men, were smirking or otherwise eyeing me up. I didn’t feel safe at all. This was one of the reasons that I didn’t want to leave the house alone even if I was given the opportunity to do so.

Despite what had just happened, I hurried to catch up with the others. We went down a short corridor that muffled the sound of the foyer until we reached a heavy door with the number three stencilled on to it. After a quick check of our tickets, we went inside. The door closed behind us so the only sound we heard came from the loudspeakers on the walls. The screen was already playing but it looked like it was just the tail end of the trailers.

Our seats, predictably, were at the back. The cinema itself was only about half full and there was no one around us in any direction. As we took our seats in the dark it was difficult not to feel very isolated. I was at the end of our little foursome with Liam next to me, Zoe next to him and then Jacob furthest from me. Before I’d even got myself settled, I had Liam’s arm around my shoulder and he wouldn’t be shrugged off easily.

“Sit still.” Liam leaned in and said to me, “Let’s not start our date off with a spanking.”

I shuddered but knew it was no empty threat. Whilst not too terribly common, a man disciplining his woman in public wasn’t unheard of. Too many times, whilst growing up I’d seen women getting punished wherever they happened to be at the time. Whether at the supermarket, out at the park, or even just on the street. Mom had always used those occasions to remind me it was important that I was a good girl.

The film started and at least it provided a distraction. My brain had started to really churn through future possibilities about what I had gotten myself into and none of them were good. If I ended up with Liam, I could see the sort of woman I would be forced to become and I didn’t like it one bit.

Thankfully, everyone seemed to just be watching the film. I didn’t pay much attention to it and really had no idea what was going on after fifteen minutes or so. I was just grateful that I didn’t need to talk to Liam or in some way feign interest. I sat, leaning away from Liam, and ate my popcorn.

The worst part about Liam, I decided, was that he really didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. Then again, I couldn’t say for sure that he WAS doing something wrong either. He acted in a very macho way, but was that his fault when his whole life had been spent telling him to be that way? He saw me as his, no doubt about it, but that was no different to how ninety-nine percent of guys would think. He was just contrasted with Jacob who was his polar opposite. I wondered if I was just making excuses for Liam, giving myself a case of Stockholm Syndrome to better endure what a long-term relationship with him might be like. It was hard to say.

I leaned forwards to take the large soda that I’d been bought and turned my head to look down our row. My heart nearly stopped as I saw that Zoe had her arms around Jacob and was practically sitting on his lap as they kissed. I froze up. I felt a sense of betrayal which wasn’t mine to have. I had turned Jacob down but… that wasn’t right!

I felt the familiar impulsiveness which so often made me do things I quickly regretted taking over. Jacob had all but said that he preferred me to Zoe and yet he was kissing her so wantonly, in a way that made my heart ache and my blood boil. Well, two could play at that game.

“Kiss me.” I demanded to Liam as I sat up straight.

“Huh?” Liam had been paying more attention to the film than the rest of us and apparently was slow on the uptake.

Forcing matters into my own hands, I leaned across my seat and turned Liam’s face toward me. Despite what I was doing my eyes were fixed beyond his head at Jacob. Their kiss seemed odd, like he was doing his best not to touch her any more than he had to.

I pushed my face forwards before I could have second thoughts. My lips met Liam’s, and we started to kiss. It was only after it started that I realised that this was my first kiss, a moment that was supposed to be special and that I was doing because I was jealous and trying to make someone else feel the same way, whether it was Jacob or Zoe, I had no idea. Maybe it was both. The point was that I was now feeling Liam’s soft, slightly dry, lips against my own. I was feeling his tongue probing forwards with absolutely no skill. It must’ve been his first kiss as well.

As so often happened with my impulsiveness, I quickly regretted what I was doing. As the shock of seeing my best friends and my crush kissing subsided, I was left with what I was doing. I suddenly felt disgusted, not by Liam who had little say in what I’d initiated, but in myself. The impulsiveness I always swore I wouldn’t let overpower after each incident remained as strong as ever.

I didn’t know how long the kiss went on for. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant, even when Liam’s hands started exploring. A couple of times they got too close to places I didn’t want them to go and each time I repositioned his hands and, to my surprise, he didn’t move them again. Maybe he was so happy that he had made a “breakthrough” with me that he didn’t want to push the boat.

I opened my eyes and as I did so I felt my heartbeat fall out of rhythm for just a second. Jacob was looking at me. Our eyes met and I froze up. Slowly and seemingly simultaneously both myself and Jacob separated from our partners. I heard Liam complaining but after I blocked his attempt to re-engage the kiss he sat back rather sulkily.

By the time I was sat back in my seat I was rather glad that the cinema was so dark. Nobody would see how much I was blushing. I wondered if kissing Liam had made Jacob jealous, as intended, or if he thought I was just having a good time. I couldn’t resist glancing over every now and then and saw that despite Zoe seeming very keen, Jacob didn’t engage her in another kiss. It almost made up for the fact that I could still taste Liam.

The film was long and, in my opinion, quite dull. Sure, there were plenty of explosions, and after each one Liam loudly cheered despite cinema etiquette, but the story made little sense. Still, it wasn’t the same old cartoons that I was often forced to watch at home if I tried to watch TV. As we stood up at the end and filed out of the screen and back into the lobby, I felt my diaper sagging quite a bit. I dropped the empty soda container in the trash and wished I hadn’t drunk so much. The problem was how salty the popcorn was.

As I looked around the lobby, letting my eyes adjust to the light, I felt a hand reaching between my legs and pressing my diaper against me. I gasped and reacted instinctively. I spun around and slapped the person doing it, having no idea who it was. It turned out to be Liam who quickly withdrew his hand and put it up to his cheek. He looked shocked that I would dare to do such a thing.

“You…” Liam muttered.

“You shouldn’t do that!” I exclaimed.

The concept of being told what he could and couldn’t do seemed completely alien to Liam. I think he would’ve been less shocked if I had suddenly sprouted a second head. Zoe and Jacob, who had lingered behind in the seats came out through the doors behind us. My eyes flicked to the side, and I saw that Zoe had Jacob’s hand and was practically pulling him into the lobby. They stopped next to us.

“What’s going on?” Jacob asked when he saw the awkward situation developing.

“She slapped me…” Liam said. He sounded like he was genuinely in shock.

“He snuck up behind me.” I added.

“I was checking you!” Liam held his arms out to the side, “Like any good man would.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t need a change.” I muttered defiantly. It was a lie, of course, but I wasn’t about to admit that Liam was right in his assumption.

Thankfully, attention was soon diverted as Zoe stepped closer to Jacob. She had a huge smile on her face as she took hold of Jacob’s hand and brought it forwards to press against her own diaper. She was smiling coyly at Jacob who seemed surprised and pulled his hand away quickly. He looked around, seemingly embarrassed and not wanting to be seen touching a girl like that.

“What about me?” Zoe asked flirtatiously, “Do I need a change?”

“I… I don’t think so.” Jacob said quietly.

I saw Zoe’s face fall and she was practically pouting like a toddler. It would’ve been quite comical if I wasn’t still expecting Liam to suddenly leap at me for what I had done. The slap seemed to be so unexpected that his brain was still trying to process it.

“I’m soaked!” Zoe exclaimed loud enough that half the lobby probably heard her. I felt embarrassed on her behalf.

“It can probably wait until we get home.” Jacob said quickly, “Speaking of… Liam, shall we make a move?”

I was grateful that Jacob seemed to be trying to get things moving again. The longer Liam was left to process that I had defied and embarrassed him in public the more likely I would face some strong punishment.

“Liam?” Jacob said again when his friend had remained completely still. He reached out and touched his arm.

“Huh? Oh, right, sure.” Liam said.
