The door opened again, and a smiling young woman came out followed closely by handsome guy. I met the girl’s eyes as she hurried away, and I could see her face was flushed red. I wondered if that was just from the change or if something else had gone on in there.

“Come on.” Liam held the door open and gestured for me to go inside.

I walked in to see a makeshift changing room. I’d never been in the small room before; I assumed it was usually kept as a storage area as it certainly wasn’t like the permanent changing areas that I normally went to. The changing table looked like it had come from the nurse’s office. I assumed they chose this room for the changes because of the sink at the back that looked old and was constantly dripping but otherwise seemed to work. The whole room smelt pretty bad, not surprising for how many diaper changes had already occurred in there. The smell of used diapers in the large pail in the corner only made somehow more nauseating by the extra strength air freshener and disinfectant that filled the air like a heavy cloud.

My dress had a zip at the back and Liam turned me around so he could pull it down. I shivered as the dress drooped from my shoulders. I stepped out of it and felt incredibly anxious. Liam dropped my dress in a pile on a chair in the corner of the room whilst I did my best at covering everything up with my hands. Liam looked at me for an uncomfortably long time.

“Are you going to get on the table?” Liam said in a deep voice, “Or do you need my help for that too.”

I swallowed and turned to face the table. I put my hands on the padded surface and hopped up, turning around to land on my butt before shuffling into position and lying down. There was no shortage of spare diapers in the room, clearly the organisers believed a lot of changes would be needed before the night was out. Liam grabbed a diaper as well as some of the wipes that the school had provided. I watched nervously and he stood at the foot of the table, staring at my diaper with a look of hunger in his eyes.

“It’s about time I got to see this.” Liam said. One of his big hands rested on the front of the diaper whilst the other reached for the tapes.

I tried to remain calm as each tape was pulled away from the disposable until the front of the padding was slumped against my crotch. Liam couldn’t keep himself from smiling as he took the waistband and pulled it down, revealing my most intimate areas. He looked like an adventurer in a movie opening a chest and seeing endless riches, for seconds that stretched out over eons he stared, unmoving.

Eventually, Liam remembered what he was supposed to be doing. He took some of the wipes and started cleaning me. Starting at my lower tummy, he moved around to the creases with my legs and down near my bottom before moving back up towards my opening. I couldn’t stop myself from trembling as he gingerly cleaned me, I don’t know if he mistook my shivering for arousal, but he seemed to linger there.

“Stop…” I mumbled quietly.

“You want this just as much as I do.” Liam growled.

“I don’t.” I said a little more forcefully. My heart pumped hard and fast as my body flooded with adrenaline.

“Don’t say no to me.” Liam muttered as he pressed a little harder.

Knowing where things were about to go, my body sprung into action before my brain clicked into gear. I sat up and swung my arm forwards, slapping him in the face with everything I could muster. He reeled back but seemed to be more surprised than hurt. I scurried off the side of the changing table and stood at the opposite end, breathing hard.

“If you try to touch me again, I’ll scream!” I exclaimed.

“You’re my girlfriend.” Liam said. His voice was a little shaky, it seemed his confidence wasn’t as strong as he made it out to be, “It’s your duty to…”

“I’m NOT your girlfriend!” I shouted, “If you think you can just do what you want to me, and I’ll take it like a good little girl then you are sorely mistaken.”

Liam stood and stared at me. I didn’t look away, even as I realised that I was standing in front of him as naked as the day I was born. I couldn’t do it. I had tried to go along with everything the way everyone else seemed to want, but I just couldn’t do it any longer. I didn’t care if my parents threw me out of the house, I didn’t care what happened, I just knew that if I was in a room with Liam for one moment longer than necessary one of us would do something we’d regret.

“You’re crazy.” Liam said shaking his head, “If you’re trying to play hard to get…”

“Jesus Christ, are you really this thick-headed?” I asked, “I’m not interested, Liam. I couldn’t be less interested. Now get out!”

Liam didn’t move. It seemed like he was trying to work out what to do. For all his talk about putting a woman in her place, he didn’t seem to know what to do when someone genuinely stood up to him. I watched warily, ready to make a move at a moment’s notice and keeping the table between us.

“Screw this.” Liam finally said with a shake of his head, “You aren’t cute enough to be worth all this trouble. You’re crazy.”

“Uh huh.” I grunted as Liam started towards the door.

“You don’t know what you’re missing.” Liam said just as he reached for the handle, “I could have any girl in this place.”

I remained silent. When he felt like he had finally got the last word he opened the door and stepped outside. I slumped forwards on to the padded table and let out a shaky breath. I didn’t know what I had just done to my future. I had seen my life with Liam, one of domestic servitude and doing as I was told, and I had rejected it as emphatically as I could. In its place was left an uncertain future. One where I was likely to be homeless by the next day.

Before the door to the changing room had closed fully, the nurse from outside walked in with a frown. He said Liam had sent him in. I nodded and got back on the table so my diaper change could be completed, and I could be dressed again.

Stumbling out of the changing room, I half-expected Liam to be nearby. I thought he would try to claim me again. He wasn’t there. I slowly walked away from the changing room as another couple walked in and wasn’t entirely sure what to do with myself.

I headed towards the doors that I had come through at the start of the night. Just before reaching them, I saw Zoe sitting at a table with her arms folded across her chest and pouting considerably. I would’ve gone over to check on her, but two seats away I saw Liam scowling towards me. I decided to head out for some fresh air instead. I would need to find some way to explain what had happened to my parents that might preserve the roof over my head in the short term.

I hurried outside before I convinced myself that somehow apologising to Liam would be a smart move. It may have been smart, but it wasn’t what I wanted. I hurried down the hallway and wiped my eyes before the tears fell. The few people I passed stared as I went by. I felt the heat coming from the main hall gradually give way to the colder air as I approached the main doors.

I pushed it open and felt the breeze against my face. For a second, I thought I might collapse, and for once it had nothing to do with my clumsiness. It was the adrenaline draining out of my system and leaving me feeling empty. I closed by eyes and moved out of the way of the doors to lean back against the brick wall.

“Emma?”

No sooner had I exhaled a breath I’d been holding for far too long than I heard something that nearly made me scream. My eyes opened and, on the steps in front of me, I saw Jacob sitting down. The top button of his shirt was untucked, and his tie was hanging loose.

“Jacob? What are you doing out here?” I asked quietly.

“I needed some fresh air.” Jacob replied. He looked away from me and out at the stretch of green lawn in front of us that then became the road. He scooted over and patted the step next to him.

I walked forwards and sat down. As my padded rear touched the concrete steps, I realised I was wet already, I had no idea when that happened. It was extra disappointing considering I had been changed so recently.

“How about you?” Jacob continued after I remained silent.

“Oh, you know…” I let out a deep sigh, “Just ruining my life, same as usual.”

“Huh? What’s up?” Jacob asked. There was genuine concern in his voice.

“I just basically told Liam to go to hell.” I replied, “He was… moving too fast and I’m just not into him.”

“You too?” When I looked at Jacob with a frown he continued, “Geez, I know Zoe is your friend, but she can be… a lot. When we were dancing, she was talking about marriage and kids and… I told her before I wasn’t ready for all that. She was looking for me to be “her guy”, you know what I mean? The one that would take control of her. I was honest, I told her I didn’t think I could EVER be that person. I told her when I agreed to come to the prom that I wasn’t necessarily looking for anything romantic or serious, I think she took that as a challenge.”

“But what about the kiss?” I asked with a frown, “At the cinema?”

“You mean the ambush?” Jacob laughed and shook his head, “She grabbed me and before I knew what was happening, she was pushing her tongue down my throat.”

Despite everything that had happened, I couldn’t help but let out a little laugh. Zoe had intimated that she and Jacob were serious, now it seemed like it was a case that she was looking for something that didn’t exist.

“Honestly, I’ve been dreading tonight.” Jacob finally said, “I knew she wanted something I just couldn’t give her.”

I realised, quite suddenly, that our experiences weren’t all that different. I had been dreading being the “little woman” for Liam, and Jacob had been dreading being the “big man” for Zoe. I looked at Jacob and felt my heart lurch. It was trying to take control of me, stop my brain from overthinking everything as I so often did.

“Can I… hug you?” I asked quietly.

“Of course.” Jacob replied. He opened his arms and looked for all the world like there was nothing he wanted more.

I leaned forwards and felt his arms around me. I let myself sink against him and put my hands on his back. I could’ve stayed like that for the rest of the night. I could smell him, and it was intoxicating, his breath against my ear gave me goosebumps. I started talking almost before my brain had worked out what I wanted to say.

“Can I be honest with you?” I whispered.

“Always.” Jacob replied.

“I want you.” I said. The words came out as a gasp, like if they didn’t get out of my mouth when they did, they would never be said at all.

Jacob didn’t say anything. His head was on my shoulder, and I felt terrified that I had somehow misread everything. I had made the worst mistake of my life in turning him down and maybe he didn’t want to give me a second chance at all. What if the relationship with Zoe wasn’t over despite the difficulties they’d experienced. I tensed up.

“Emma…” Jacob said quietly.

My heart sank. Suddenly what was left of my world felt like it was caving in. I felt Jacob letting me go but I didn’t want to, I wanted to hold on to him. I lived in a moment where he hadn’t rejected me and as soon as I let him talk it would all be over.

“Wait…” I said as I desperately clung to Jacob, “I know now that turning you down was the biggest mistake of my life. Even before you told me about how your mother is treated as an equal, I wanted you in a way I’ve never wanted any man…”

“Emma, please…” Jacob said again. He pushed a little to try and get me to let go, “You ne-…”

“I think I love you!” I cried out desperately as tears formed in my eyes.

I couldn’t deny that it was the truth. Few things had ever occupied my thoughts like Jacob. My heart ached for him. I felt him go still again and then a second later, he rather more forcefully separated me from him. I leaned back and looked at the ground between us, I couldn’t bear to see the look of pity and embarrassment I was sure must’ve been on Jacob’s face.

“Emma, look at me.” Jacob said softly.

I couldn’t. I shook my head. I wanted to get up and run away but I wasn’t sure my legs would support me, besides, Jacob still had hold of one of my hands, a fact I only noticed after he gave it a little squeeze.

Jacob’s other hand came up and cupped me under the chin. He made me face him, never anything more than the gentlest of touches required as I allowed myself to look up. I blinked and felt tears roll down my cheeks. I expected pity to be etched on his face. Instead, I saw him smiling.

“You don’t know how much I’ve wanted to hear you say that.” Jacob said.

“R-Really?” I stuttered. It felt like my heart had stopped.

“Emma, I’ve been crazy about you since we first met.” Jacob said, “I’ve never met a girl… no, a woman, so sure of what she wants. Maybe Liam is right, maybe I’m some weak boy who doesn’t know how to be the alpha man. I’ve never been interested in a glorified maid, seeing you stand up for yourself and speak your mind, it drives me crazy in the best possible way.”

If I wasn’t already totally in love with Jacob, then his words would’ve washed over me like a spell. I was leaning into the hand that cupped my chin, not trusting my body to be able to support itself any longer. Jacob had stopped talking and it felt like I should have a response, but my brain had seemingly melted, and I had no words at all for a moment that deserved an eloquence I wished I possessed. My mouth opened and closed without anything coming out.

“Don’t say anything.” Jacob whispered.

Jacob leaned forwards and I realised what was about to happen. He had his eyes closed and as he drew inches away from me, he puckered his lips. I closed my eyes and felt his mouth closing on mine, his breath within me. I leaned into him, and he wrapped one arm around my back whilst the other went to my head, holding me in place as if there was any chance in the world that I would want to break this perfect moment.

I felt as if I was melting into Jacob as I pushed myself closer to him. It was the first unambiguously good feeling I had felt in a long time. I don’t know how long we sat there with our lips locked together but it wasn’t long enough. Jacob pulled away first and I slowly opened my eyes to see him looking just as happy as I felt.

“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that for.” Jacob said quietly.

My cheeks were flushed, and I couldn’t keep up eye contact with the man of my dreams, the man I had just declared my love for. I felt a sudden wave of terror, that it might be some big joke despite what Jacob had said. I leaned forwards and kissed him again, wrapping my arms around him. It was only as I felt his lips parted and allow entry for my tongue that I became satisfied that this was something very real.

By the time I belatedly pulled away I had saliva around my lips. I was slightly out of breath but at least I wasn’t the only one with a red face. Jacob put his arm around my shoulders and chuckled to himself.

“What?” I asked.

“I was just thinking how much trouble you would have saved us if you had just said yes to me when I asked you out.” Jacob shook his head.

I snorted with laughter myself. But it didn’t take long for guilt to start taking over. I had no problem jettisoning Liam, but Jacob was with Zoe. What would she think if she found out? When she found out would’ve been a better question, there was no way we could keep it from her, I wouldn’t have wanted to even if I could.

“We need to go back in there.” I said, “Zoe deserves to know what’s happening.”

“I know.” Jacob sighed, “I don’t want to hurt her, but you’re right. What about Liam?”

“Liam? What about Liam?” I asked.

“Aren’t you worried about hurting him too?” Jacob asked.

“Honestly, at this point, I’m not sure he’d care.” I shrugged.

We stood up and dusted ourselves down before walking back through the doors to the school. Our hands found each other and swung by our sides as we went back towards the music. Despite the coming awkwardness, I couldn’t believe my luck. Jacob, the one tolerable man I’d ever met, was holding my hand!

The music grew louder until we finally reached the hall again. I looked over to the seats where I had last seen Zoe and Liam sitting together. They weren’t there anymore. I frowned.

“That’s strange.” I said, still looking over at the strangers now occupying the seats, “They were sitting… What?”

As I was talking, I heard Jacob let out a loud laugh next to me. I looked around at him and saw that he was bent over, eyes tightly closed as he shook his head and continued to laugh. I didn’t have a clue what had set him off until he held up an arm and pointed to the dancefloor.

“I don’t…” I started as I followed where he was pointing with my eyes, “Oh my god!”

Through a gap in the crowds, illuminated by the colourful lights and lasers that swept across the hall, I saw Jacob and Zoe. They were in each other’s arms and slow dancing. Jacob’s hands on my best friend’s rear end whilst they shared a kiss as passionate as any I’d ever seen. I had to cover my mouth with my hand at the sight.

“I guess we don’t need to be worried about telling them.” Jacob leaned over to my ear and said over the music. I could only laugh with him as he brushed against me, “Would you like to dance?”

“Only if you’ve brought your steel-toe capped dancing shoes.” I laughed, “Liam can tell you how bad I am.”

“I’m sure I’ll be fine.” Jacob replied.

“Before we dance, just one more thing…” I said.

“What’s up?” Jacob asked.

“Kiss me.” I said as I leaned into his ear, “Prove to me that what happened outside wasn’t just some crazy dream.”

“Gladly.” Jacob said with a big smile as he turned to face me and leaned forwards.

When our lips touched it was as if someone had hit the mute button on the music. Everything and everyone melted away until it felt like it was just me and Jacob, alone in an empty void. When he pulled away, I was no longer under any illusion how real it all was.

Jacob took my hand and pulled me gently out on to the dancefloor. Unlike the first time I had been out there, I didn’t feel self-conscious at all as I started dancing for Jacob, especially since it turned out Jacob wasn’t much better than I was. After a couple of songs, just as I was starting to get sweaty my back bumped against someone. I turned around to see Zoe, who seemed surprised to see me. In fact, she looked a little worried as she had Liam’s hands all over her. She clearly thought she’d been caught “stealing” my date until I walked over to Jacob, and he put his arm around my shoulders.

For a couple of seconds there was confusion as no one seemed to know how to respond. Then Zoe started to laugh, which made me giggle and the two boys followed soon after. I turned back to Jacob, and we danced long into the night. I prayed, as the last song ended, and people started to leave that it was going to be the first of many evenings I spent with Jacob.
